Tuesday Morning Shootaround: Wizards Shake Up Roster right before Season Opener

Posted on October 29, 2013 by Jammal A. Matthews

On Friday afternoon the Wizards decided to part ways with veteran center Emeka Okafor via trade with the Phoenix Suns.  In return, the Wizards received Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown, Kendall Marshall, & Malcolm Lee.  Gortat was clearly the target here as the Wizards figured to not even keep the other three players.  This was obviously a way to clear some money off of the table for next season.  I understand that this season hasn't started yet, you'd have to agree that additional chips on the table during the off-season next year could yield some interesting conversations.  That's for next summer to figure out.  Right now, the Wizards are set up for success with a full cadre of starters heading in to Detroit.  Even with the improvements that I did see, I still felt as though this team was incomplete.  I don't have that anymore.  We aren't rolling out the season with huge gaps in the starters and I'm satisfied.

Not quite sure what "Miley" is going to do with that sledgehammer....

A few of the guys put their heads together and decided to make some predictions for this season.  Do you agree with any of the fortune tellers here??  This was done pre-trade, but Cory may have the gift...

"44-38. I think a trade for another big man is imminent, and if the Wiz do acquire someone to fill in the gaping hole in the front court, 44 wins is not out of the question. Of course that prediction goes on the basis that Wall and Beal play at least 70+ games and Nene can play 65+ games. Playoffs, we're coming for ya!" - Cory

Trev takes a look at Bradley Beal's preseason stats, and by the looks of this piece- he was "marginally successful".

"Beal finishes his preseason averaging 20.7 points per game, which currently lands him 4th in scoring, just behind Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, and Anthony Davis and in front of guys like James Harden and Damian Lillard."

The new nickname for our backcourt duo of Wall & Beal is now referred to as Slash & Swish.  I preferred Credit & Debit.  At least I thought that name was pretty hilarious.  Check out what other names Wizards fans came up with.
I really don't know what to say about these photos of Marcin.  I'll let you digest it.  Thanks Trevor.  Really appreciate it.

If you haven't taken a look at the Wizards Weekly Outlook, Trevor Jackson has you covered.

"So now that  the Wizards have a healthy center in Marcin Gortat, let's focus on some more pressing matters. 82 more pressing matters. It's time for the regular season, and for premiere week, the Wizards have three teams with three different levels of quality in the 76ers, the Pistons, and the two-time defending champs Heat. Yes, the games will be televised."
